Australian Deal Volume Eclipses 2020 Total by Third Quarter

By on November 2nd, 2021

Australian commercial property sales climbed in the third quarter to push year-to-date 2021 deal volume past the 2020 total with another quarter of dealmaking still to go, the latest Australia Capital Trends report shows. Sales of office and retail properties underpinned the third quarter increase.

Sales of income-producing properties rose 70% on a subdued Q3 2020 to reach A$13.5 billion ($10.1 billion). For the first three quarters of the year sales climbed to A$43.0 billion.

Office deal volume in the third quarter and for the year to date was well ahead of 2020, though a shade behind the pre-Covid five-year average. The biggest deal of the quarter — and the year so far — was the NPS acquisition of Melbourne Quarter Tower for A$1.2 billion in July. In the retail sector, deal volume reached A$3.2 billion, buttressed by several sizeable deals.
